Over 318 indigent individuals in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Nigeria, had their spirits lifted recently when the Sisters of the Poor, led by Rev. Sr. Ursula Anunobi and her team, visited the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital (AEFUTHA) and distributed food to patients. They also extended their outreach to roadside beggars near St. Theresa Catholic Cathedral, where they served well-prepared, protein-rich meals free of charge.
The beneficiaries included 218 indigent patients from AEFUTHA 1 and 2, along with 100 beggars from the Abakaliki capital. The devastating effects of hunger in Nigeria were evident in the eager faces of the hospital patients, who left their sickbeds one by one to receive a meal.
Despite the turnout exceeding expectations, the food distribution was carried out successfully. However, the emotional scene left a lasting impact. Upon her arrival, Rev. Sr. Ursula was moved to tears as some beggars cried out, “I am hungry! I am hungry!” while others pleaded, “Give to the blind! Give to the blind!”
The event highlighted the urgent need to address hunger and poverty in the region, leaving a profound impression on all involved.
