What is Sisters of the Poor? – Sisters of the Poor

The Sisters of the Poor Foundation is a global organization that originated in Jefferson City, Missouri as supporters there personally grew in friendship with Sister Ursula through her local family. Sisters of the Poor of Abakaliki is a group of religious sisters and postulants located in Abakaliki, Nigeria who beg for food, feed the hungry, and find ways to provide medical care for those who have no access to medical care.

This prompted Sister’s friends to create the Sisters of the Poor Foundation in August of 2018. In disasters and hardships, Sister Ursula feeds and facilitates medical care for people in Africa.

Sisters of the Poor of Abakaliki and the Sisters of the Poor Foundation are unrelated to Little Sisters of the Poor. The Sisters of the Poor Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charity whose sole purpose is to raise funds to support the work of Sr. Ursula Anunobi and the Sisters of the Poor of Abakaliki. The Sisters of the Poor operates this sistersofthepoor.org website.

Sister Ursula of Abakaliki, Nigeria has dedicated herself to personally finding, feeding, and bringing medical care to the poor, sick, and dying of Abakaliki. She visits Jefferson City occasionally to recuperate and maintain ties with family and friends, and through these visits the Sisters of the Poor Foundation was organized by a group of friends. We were invited to meet Sister Ursula on one of those visits and were immediately motivated to contribute to her work. This has provided us an opportunity to participate in charitable work where there is a direct connection and we are allowed to see it grow, and we are eternally grateful for this privilege. One reason I like donating to the Sisters of the Poor is that I know Sr. Ursula personally, and I know that she works with the poorest of the poor in her country. I see the results of what we have given to Sr. Ursula's ministry and so even though I am not physically present with her, I feel united with her work with these people. I am very grateful for her ministry.

I just remember Sr. Ursula sitting in the chapel during my Holy Hour pre-pandemic. She was so cute. A couple times she asked me to give her a ride to the Goodwill store. (And I did, of course. It's hard to say no.) Let's just say that I trust her and trust you and others who advocate for her needs. I trust how the money is being used. It's my way of supporting the poor overseas.
